Three UK
Sikh NRIs drowned in lake
Wolverhampton, Sep. 22, 2006
Ranvir Saini
Three NRI (non-resident Indians), Harvinder
Singh, 15, Satvir Singh, 17, and Tajinder Singh, 21 were drowned
after paddling in a Lake Ullswater, Cumbria. Another boy 15, was
rescued and taken to hospital, where his condition was described
as stable. The bodies of the three missing males were recovered
by police divers on Saturday night.
A Cumbria Police, said: "I think the lake was
reasonably calm. "Unfortunately it does have deep areas and
shelving and the water is extremely cold so it's all speculation
at the moment but I am assuming that someone has gone too deep and
they have got cold and been unable to swim. All three victims were
not closely related, but may have been from the same extended family.
"
Mr. Zak Ratcliffe, a boat hire stand leapt into the
water and try to save the the Singhs but all in vain. He said, "When
I first saw a group of six lads I thought they might be a bit rowdy,
so I put a £20 deposit on each boat. But they were good as
gold. They were all please and thank you, and they were just enjoying
themselves on the boats. Later on we could hear them splashing around
in the water and just mucking about. They were still wearing their
clothes. Then I heard some shouting and I could tell they were in
trouble. I got in a boat and went around and I couldn't see them
so I jumped into the water. It was a heat-of-the-moment thing, I
didn't really think about it, and I've since been told it was the
wrong thing for me to do as it put me in danger. There was a guy
about to hire a boat off us and he jumped in as well but we couldn't
see them anywhere. They were just gone, there was nothing we could
do."
