Edmonton police announced Saturday that two individuals were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Harshandeep Singh, a 20-year-old security guard and Punjabi student.

Singh was found critically injured in a stairwell at an apartment building early Friday morning after officers responded to reports of a gunshot in the Central McDougall neighborhood. He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after.

Later that afternoon, police arrested 30-year-olds Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux. Both suspects have been charged with first-degree murder. Under the Criminal Code, first-degree murder includes killings that are planned and deliberate or cases involving on-duty peace officers, regardless of premeditation.

According to Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey of the Homicide Section, police typically wait to confirm a death as a homicide before releasing a victim’s identity. However, Singh’s name was shared publicly to aid the investigation and reassure the community about public safety.

An autopsy scheduled for Monday will officially determine the cause and manner of death. Investigators believe Rain and Saulteaux acted alone in the crime, and a weapon was recovered during their arrests.

The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and urges anyone with information to come forward by calling 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
Singh’s death has left the community in mourning as police work to piece together the events that led to this tragic loss.
