Madhuri Gupta's judicial custody extended

A city court Saturday extended by 14 days the judicial custody of Madhuri Gupta, a junior Indian diplomat arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja conducted the hearing through video-conferencing and asked the Tihar Jail authorities to present Gupta, 53, in court June 11.
Gupta, a second secretary at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, was arrested here April 27 on charges of passing on information to the Pakistani intelligence agency.
Gupta, who belongs to Delhi, was earlier in police custody for five days and then in 14-day judicial custody.

Court rejects Madhuri Gupta's bail plea
New Delhi, May 21
A Delhi court Friday rejected the bail plea of Madhuri Gupta, a junior Indian diplomat arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
Gupta, who is in judicial custody, pleaded for bail on grounds that she is not required by the police for any investigation.
"She is in judicial custody even when the police does not require her for further investigation," said Joginder Dahiya, Gupta's counsel.
Her bail plea also stated that she is suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes and there is nobody from her family to pursue the case. "Her parents are no more and her brother is in the US and she is unable to defend herself properly," added Dahiya.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja rejected the bail plea on the grounds that the matter is still under investigation.
According to a Delhi Police official, they are awaiting the forensic report of Gupta's laptop and bail given to her at his stage may hinder the investigation.
Gupta, 53, a second secretary at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, is in judicial custody till May 29. She was arrested here April 27 on charges of passing on information to the Pakistani intelligence agency.

Madhuri Gupta picked up packet for Pakistani handler in Jammu

Madhuri Gupta, the Indian diplomat arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan's ISI, had picked up a packet for her Pakistani handler during her visit to Jammu on March 30, intelligence sources here say.
Gupta, who was sent to 14-days judicial remand by a Delhi court Saturday, had picked up the packet in Raghunath Bazar area of Jammu city, the sources said.
However, who handed over the packet to her could not be ascertained, the sources added.
Gupta, a second secretary at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, had hired a local driver while doing shopping in Jammu city. She had travelled across the border in her official car with the diplomatic number plate of the Indian High Commission to the home of a doctor couple in Sunderbani, 120 km north of Jammu.
However, when she visited Jammu she hired a different driver, the intelligence sources said.
Des Raj, a driver from Sunderbani, was hired by Gupta to drive her car from Sunderbani to Jammu and back on March 30. She did some shopping in the well-known Raghunath Bazar area of Jammu, where she is alleged to have picked up a packet for her Pakistani handler.
The car was parked in the parking lot of Shri Maharja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital. The driver was there all along till Gupta returned from shopping, which was almost 90 minutes, the sources said.
From there, she asked the driver to take her to a popular sweet shop in Gandhi Nagar area, before returning to Sunderbani.
The driver had been hired for Gupta by Kham Raj Sharma, with whom she had stayed.
Sunderbani is close to the Line of Control (LoC) that divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
Raghunath Bazar is a busy shopping area, a favourite with pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi shrine. Pilgrim throng the market for shopping, where dry fruits, local and Kashmiri handicraft are the favourite items.

Madhuri Gupta says she is being framed (Second Lead)

Madhuri Gupta, a junior Indian diplomat arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), told a court here Saturday that she was being framed, police sources said.
Gupta was sent to 14 days judicial custody by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja. The police were told to present Gupta before the court on May 15.
According to a police official, Gupta, 53, said she was not a senior officer and could not have passed on sensitive information to her contacts in Pakistan where she was posted in the Indian High Commission.
But she said she had revealed the identities of Indian undercover agents in Pakistan.
Her counsel Jagmohan Dahiya said police wanted to extend her custody for two more days, which the court rejected. Earlier she was in police custody for five days.
According to court sources, the police wanted to extend her remand as they claimed she was changing her statements time and again in order to mislead them.
She has been booked under the Official Secrets Act.
