Indian consulate in touch with filmmaker held in US

India has got consular access to a detained Indian national in the US who was held at Houston airport for carrying a prohibited item in his luggage.

Vijay Kumar, 40, a filmmaker, was arrested at Houston airport Aug 20 for carrying brass knuckles in his luggage, a prohibited item under Texas laws.

"On 25th August, a representative of Consulate General of India (CGI) met Mr. Kumar and spent about 40 minutes with him. He appeared to be in good health," said a press release issued by the Ministry of External Affairs here Saturday.

It said the consulate general was in touch with Kumar, local authorities and members of the Indian community as soon information was received about his arrest.

Kumar is currently at an immigration holding facility at Houston.

The statement added that investigations were going on and the matter is currently in the courts. "The CGI would remain actively engaged in the matter, to provide necessary consular assistance to Mr. Kumar and to satisfy itself that the case is handled expeditiously," it added.
