Anamikka Veeramani 14 years old won the 83rd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee Friday night at an event broadcast live on ABC television from the Grand Hyatt hotel in Washington, D.C. She is a daughter of NRI. She defeated another Indian American, Shantanu Srivatsa of West Fargo,
Ms. Veeramani beat out 272 other spellers from around the country and other countries such as Canada and Jamaica, to remain standing Friday night and claim the Championship trophy. She gave credit to he mother and her younger brother who helped her to memorise the words.
Ms Veeramani wants to get in Harvard and she wants to be a cardiovascular surgeon. The contest began Thursday with 273 spellers ranging in age from 8 to 15, some from as far away as China and New Zealand. They included eight-year-old Vanya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kansas, the youngest sister of last year’s champion, Kavya Shivashankar.
Kavya too had her own moment of glory when President Barack Obama met her in the Oval Office on Thursday and congratulated Kavya on her extraordinary achievement and reiterated the importance of a top-flight education for success in the 21st century economy.
