Two weeks ago, Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) chief S Samy Vellu said that Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED) official had been identified as being responsible for the missing RM5.26 million. I don't know how the cost for AIMST University came to over RM500 million ($208 million) from the earlier estimate of RM230 million." The cost of construction ballooned from an initial 230 million ringgit to close to 500 million ringgit.

Yesterday, the local news media said:

  • The police had recovered RM1.7million, the part of missing RM5.26 million.
  • At least two people who could have been involved in the disappearance of MIED funds
  • MIC vice-president Datuk S. Sothinathan, who is also MIED director, later lodged a police report over missing MIED files.

A former MIED chief executive officer P. Chitrakala Vasu lodged the complaint at Federal Commercial Crimes Investigations Department (CCID) and she said:

  • RM 2 mil in donations for Sri Lanka tsunami victims in 2004 was subsequently transferred to the account of the MIC’s social welfare arm.
  • Scores of personal files kept in her office in the MIC headquarters had gone missing, and requested the police to help her get back the files, saying she had not been allowed into the premises
