Satnam Singh, a 31-year-old Indian laborer, faced a devastating accident on a farm in Latina, near Rome, where his arm was severed and his legs crushed while operating heavy machinery on Monday.
Reports indicate Singh's employer, Antonello Lovato, allegedly drove him and his wife in a van and abandoned them on the roadside near their home in Borgo Santa Maria. Shockingly, Singh's severed arm was reportedly placed in a fruit box during this ordeal, as detailed by Italian media.
Singh and his wife waited for medical help for an hour and a half until an air ambulance airlifted him to San Camillo Forlalini hospital in Rome. Tragically, Singh succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Wednesday.
Antonello Lovato is now under investigation for manslaughter, negligence of workplace safety regulations, and failure to provide aid, sparking widespread outrage and demands for justice from trade unionists and officials alike.
The incident has highlighted concerns over the alleged exploitation of immigrant workers, prompting calls for stricter regulations and protections in the workplace. Trade unions have planned protests and strikes in response to what they describe as "barbaric exploitation."
The Indian embassy in Italy has expressed deep sorrow over Singh's death and is working closely with local authorities to support his family during this challenging time.
This tragic event underscores the need for comprehensive reforms to safeguard the rights and safety of all workers, particularly those in vulnerable positions without proper contracts or protections. It has ignited a renewed push for accountability and systemic changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Italian authorities, including Labor Minister Marina Calderone and Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, have vowed to address labor exploitation rigorously and ensure justice for Satnam Singh.
