A trip to an ashram in Puttaparthi for an NRI family turned tragic when their cab collided head-on with a bus, killing two members of the family and the driver, and left another member grievously injured near Devanahalli on Friday.

The victims, NRIs of Gujarati origin who had settled in the UK for several years, came to the city on Sunday for their annual visit to the ashram.

Around 7.30 am, the cab driver lost control over the vehicle while overtaking a truck and collided with a KSRTC bus coming from Hyderabad.

While Eshwar Lal B Patel (57) and cab driver Radhakrishna (28) of Anantapur were killed on the spot, Patel's sister Prabhavatiben Patel (63) was declared brought dead at the hospital.

Patel's wife, Urmila (55) was rushed to a city hospital where she is said to be critical, police said. The victims were identified another cab driver of the same travel agency who was trailing the car.

The bodies have been shifted to MS Ramaiah Hospital where it will be kept till other family members arrive from UK and the US.
