VOLUNTEER SERVICES OF RANJIT SINGH UBHI

I was born in a village of Jalandhar.PUNJAB.INDIA in a middle class family before partition in the year 1939.
My father was the only educated person in that area and he served D.A.V. Jalandhar as a professor in Mathematics. I started my life as social worker when I was studying at D.A.V.College Jalandhar. My father was an educationist and served our village Patara as a Social worker and started the school for girls with the help of funds from UK and CANADA. The school was started from primary classes and then upgraded up to Senior Secondary for girls in the area. I worked with my father as a Volunteer and helped him in all the activities of social work for the village and the area.

I joined as Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Ramgarhia Polytechnic Phagwara after passing my degree in 1961. I served there for about three years and organised various social activities of the students like NSS, Bhangra, and Public speaking etc and encouraged the students to serve people in the villages and help them in their daily problems. Punjab Public Service Commission appointed me as a Head of Mechanical Department in 1966 under the Secretary Punjab Technical Education. I served the Department for about 25 years. I was sent for Masters Program in Manufacturing Technology at Thaper College of Engineering and Technology during my service.

I retired as a Principal Technical College in the year 1997. I joined as Executive Committee member of NRI Sabha Jalandhar under the Commissioner Jalandhar division. Chairman of NRI Sabha assigned me the duties of In charge Investment Cell. I served that organisation for about one and half years and also looked after the following areas.

1.Chief organiser of Investment Cell for NRI people. Three persons from UK and one from USA at different places in Jalandhar district started four Units.
2.Solving Unemployment problems among the educated youth in villages and guiding the villagers to raise funds from NRI’s for the uplift of poor women in rural areas,
3.Creating NRI village with strength of 20 NRI in that village and collecting the money from them for the social work of the village, like roads, water supply, sanitary conditions and the school for girls.
4.Creating old aged homes for the seniors in the villages with the help of donation from NRI’s of the village.
5.Providing medical facilities with the help of donation from NRI and the village Panchayat by opening dispensary and small hospital for at least five villages of the area.

I served the Helpline Society at Gobindgarh as a Senior Vice President. The activities of the society include service to people below poverty line particularly helping women financially and helping their children for studies. Society started giving the training in Computer education to the women in urban area and the rural area of Jalandhar. Small library with news papers, magazines and books on social life was created for the senior citizens to keep them busy and away from busy environment of their family life.

I also worked as Chief Organizer for the Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia Welfare Society. The aim of this Society was to create centres in the villages for the women for Cutting and Tailoring, Embroidery, Fabric painting and many other areas for the uplift of their social life. This community belongs to Industrialists and they donated handsome amount for the betterment of their community. I along with my fellow volunteers collected about two lacks of rupees for the society.
I shifted to new residence in Urban Estate Phase – II Jalandhar and served the Urban Estate Social Welfare Society as General Secretary. The aims of the society are to take care of the roads, street lighting, cleanliness of the surrounding of the areas and creating goodwill among the various communities living in the colony. The funds for the working of the society are by donation from NRI living in this colony and contribution by the individual family living in Urban Estate Phase –II.

I came to Canada as Permanent Resident in 2003 and presently living with my family in Markham area of Toronto. I am presently acting as advisor to the South Asian Seniors Club in this area under the President Mr.J.S.DHANJAL. I have prepared the Project to get the grant for 23000 Canadian dollars from the Canada Govt in the month of Sept 2005. I am giving all types of guidelines to improve the living standard of the community and solve the family problems if there is any. I also nominated Mr.Dhanjal of the club for the New Pioneers Award to be given by Skills for Change Organisation. I nominated him for the community services rendered by him in Canada since his arrival to this country.
I attended English Speaking course immediately when I landed in Toronto to improve my communication skills like Canadian speaking. I came across many people from different countries like Chine, Hong Kong, Siri Lanka, Pakistan, Philippine and shared my experience with all of them. I also participated during the elections of MC for the Markham area Municipalities and supported our candidate strongly. I have also given a talk about Toronto on Television under the head” ANMOL MOTI” which was recently telecasted on the ATN channel of TV. I have very good knowledge all communities living in this area.
