5 mens have been sentenced for their roles in a major mortgage fraud scheme that defrauded Maybank of over $5.1 million. The scheme involved falsifying property sales to secure large mortgage loans under false pretenses.
On August 20, it was revealed that the fraud was uncovered when the involved parties defaulted on their loans, leading to the bank suffering a $1.79 million loss on the two properties involved. The offenders orchestrated a ruse where property sellers were misled into inflating sale prices and providing "cashback" to the fraudsters.
Bijabahadur Rai Shree Kantrai, 54, was sentenced to 7½ years in prison for his role in directing the fraudulent activities. Sufandi Ahmad, 44, received a 6½-year sentence for cheating and using forged documents. Kok Chiew Leong, 51, was sentenced to 4½ years for similar charges. Mohamed Haron Hassan, 43, and Juma’at Johari, 44, each received 10 weeks' jail time for their involvement in the conspiracy.
The fraudulent transactions involved properties in Saraca Terrace and Woodgrove Walk. The scheme included falsified documents to secure a $2.32 million mortgage for one property and a $2.84 million loan for the other. The sellers were misled into accepting inflated prices and making substantial cashback payments.
The scam came to light when the buyers, whose financial backgrounds were falsified, failed to meet their loan obligations. Authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the fraud, which has revealed additional evidence of wrong doing.
