NRI, Radhey S. Sharma, Professor of Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Iowa State University has been awarded the top British award for civil engineering “Telford Medal”.

He has won the honour for his paper “Coupling of hydraulic hysteresis and stress-strain behavior in unsaturated soils”, which presents a new theoretical framework for understanding and modeling the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of unsaturated soils.

The new framework is able to explain and model a number of aspects of the mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils that could not be represented by existing theoretical models. This could have important implications for the analysis and design of a wide variety of geotechnical works involving unsaturated natural soils or compacted fills. The authors of the paper are Simon J. Wheeler, Radhey S. Sharma, and Marc Buisson. The paper was published in the prestigious journal “Geotechnique”.

Telford Medal:
The Telford Medal was instituted following a bequest made to the Institution of Civil Engineers, London by Thomas Telford (1757-1834), first President to be expanded in the provision of medals and premiums awarded annually in connection with papers presented to the Institution in any area of Civil Engineering. The Telford Medal is the highest award of the Institution. It may also be awarded to an Author who has contributed an outstanding series of papers, irrespective of any previous recognition by the Institution in connection therewith. It may be withheld in any year if a paper of sufficient merit is not available.
