NRI Suhas Subramanyam, has clinched the Democratic nomination for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District seat. He won the primary election on Tuesday, securing his place as the Democratic candidate for the November House of Representatives race in a district that includes parts of Washington's suburbs.
Endorsed by retiring Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton, who turned the seat Democratic in 2018, the 37-year-old Subramanyam has ties to Bengaluru. He was elected to the Virginia General Assembly in 2019 and to the State Senate last year, overcoming 11 other contenders in a competitive primary.
Subramanyam’s experience includes serving as a technology advisor to President Barack Obama, where he worked on cybersecurity and modernizing government agencies. He is also a volunteer medic and firefighter. In the general election, he will face Republican Mike Clancy.
Subramanyam lives in Ashburn, Virginia with his wife, Miranda Peña Subramanyam, a volunteer at the Dulles South Food Pantry, and their two daughters.
In a fiercely contested Democratic primary, Subramanyam narrowly won the nomination for the House district in Northern Virginia, according to The Associated Press. The primary was marked by significant tension, including sexual harassment allegations against another leading candidate, State Representative Dan Helmer.
Subramanyam’s victory provides reassurance for national Democrats, as the district has shifted towards Democratic control since Wexton’s 2018 win. Despite the controversies, including accusations of campaign misconduct against Subramanyam, which he denies, he focused on his legislative record and Wexton's support.
Subramanyam’s primary win positions him to keep the district Democratic as he prepares to face Republican Mike Clancy, a lawyer and business executive, in the November election.
