NRI Major Radhika Sen, an Indian woman peacekeeper, will be honored with a prestigious military gender advocate award. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described her as a "true leader and role model."
NRI Major Radhika, who served with the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), will be honored with the prestigious '2023 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award.' UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present the award at a ceremony at the UN headquarters on May 30, in celebration of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
Lieutenant Colonel Phoeuk Chivorn, a fallen Cambodian peacekeeper, will be posthumously honored with the Dag Hammarskjold medal by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. This formal ceremony, set to take place on May 30, marks the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.
The UN General Assembly established this day in 2002 to honor all peacekeepers and remember those who have sacrificed their lives for peace. Chivorn was part of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) when he passed away in February last year due to respiratory disease.
To date, 11 Cambodian peacekeepers have died in UN missions, and 15 have been seriously injured. Since 2006, Cambodia has sent over 8,000 peacekeepers to nine countries: Sudan, South Sudan, Chad, the Central African Republic, Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria, Mali, and Yemen, as reported by the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces (NPMEC).
Currently, over 600 Cambodian personnel are on peacekeeping missions in Abyei, a special administrative zone between Sudan and South Sudan, as well as in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Lebanon.
At the same ceremony, Guterres will also present the 2023 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award to Major Radhika Sen from India, who served with the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
According to the UN, since 1948, more than two million peacekeepers from 125 countries have participated in 71 operations worldwide. Today, approximately 76,000 men and women are deployed in 11 conflict zones across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
The theme for the 2024 International Day of UN Peacekeepers is “Fit for the Future, Building Better Together.” Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, emphasized the unique global partnership of UN Peacekeeping. He highlighted the organization's evolution to remain nimble and responsive, promoting stability, protecting the vulnerable, and building durable peace through strategic partnerships.
