Mr. Brar cremated with full State Honour’s at his native village


Sarai Naga (Mukatsar) September 7, 2009

Thousands of mourners from different spheres of life today bid a farewell to former Punjab Chief Minister S. Harcharan Singh Brar with full state honours at his native village Sarai Naga today evening. Mr.Brar’s mortal remains were consigned to the flames at Sarai Naga cremation ground specially constructed in his own farm land. His son Mr. Kanwaljit Singh(Sunny) Brar a sitting congress MLA, lit the pyre. His body was brought to the cremation ground on a flower decked carriage from his home.

Heart rending scenes were witnessed as the body of Mr. Brar was laid to rest. A contingent of Punjab Police gave salute with firing 21gun shots in the air in respect of the departed soul . Punjab Chief Minister S. Parkash Singh Badal, S. Sukhbir singh Bada Deputy Chief Minister Punjab, S. Nirmal Singh Kahlon Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Sh. Manoranjan Kalia Industry Minister Punjab, Mr.Adesh Partap Singh Kairon Food and Civil Supply Minister, Mr. Sher Singh Ghubaya MP Ferozepur laid wreaths on the body of S. Brar.

After placing wreaths S. Badal shared views with the media and described Mr. Brar as seasoned politician and able administrator who worked, for the down trodden through out his life. He said Mr. Brar was made Governor of Orissa and Haryana, besides this he worked on important assignments in the congress party. The Punjab Government has declared three days state mourning in his respect and the National Flag would fly half mast on all government buildings while a Holiday for today was also declared in the State. Mr. Rajat Aggarwal Deputy Commissioner Mukatsar laid wreath on behalf General S.F.Rordigues (Retd.) Punjab Governor, Mr. Iqbal preet Singh Sahota I.G Border Zone Punjab Police placed wreath on behalf of P.S. Gill DGP Punjab, S. Jaskiran Singh and Mr. Varun Roozam both ADC Mukatsar placed wreaths on behalf of Governor of Haryana and Chief Minister of Haryana respectively.

Mr. Manpreet Singh Badal Finance Minister Punjab has condoled the sad demise of S. Harcharan Singh Brar Senior Congress Leader and former Chief Minister Punjab.

In his condolence message he termed Mr. Brar as a good statesman and a genuine person. With the passing away of Mr. Brar Punjab has lost a great visionary and thorough honest leader , said Mr. Badal He expressed his heart felt sympathies to the bereaved family .

Punjab Government Declare 3 day mourning, state funeral and holiday for tomorrow

Chandigarh, September 6

The Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal today expressed profound grief and sorrow over the sad demise of former Chief Minister of Punjab Mr. Harcharan Singh Brar, who died here today at PGI after a prolonged illness. He was 86 and is survived by his wife Smt. Gurbrinder Kaur Brar, son MLA Muktsar Mr. Kanwarjit Singh Brar (Sunny Brar) and a daughter Ms. Kanwaljit Kaur (Bubli Brar).

In a condolence message, the Chief Minister described Mr. Harcharan Singh Brar as a true statesman and a matured politician. Mr. Badal said, “In the death of Mr. Brar the state has lost a balanced and experienced leader, who stood for politics of consensus and held the Opposition in high esteem, always opting for the path of conciliation rather than confrontation.”

Sharing his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family, the Chief Minister prayed to the Almighty to give strength and courage to them to bear this irreparable loss and grant peace to the departed soul.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Government has declared 3 day mourning from today onwards till 8th September and a state funeral to be held tomorrow at 3 PM in his native village Sarai Naga in district Muktsar as a mark of respect to the departed leader. National tricolors would fly half-mast on all the government buildings. All the government offices, boards, corporations and education institutions would remain closed tomorrow in the memory of the former Chief Minister.

Brief Biodata of Mr. Harcharan Singh Brar: Born on January 21, 1922 in village Sarai Naga to Sardar Balwant Singh, Graduated from Govt College Lahore, Elected MLA from Muktsar in 1960, again from Muktsar in 1962, Gidderbaha in 1967, Kotkapura in 1969 and from Muktsar in 1992. An agriculturist by profession, he remained Governor of Orissa and Haryana, Chief Minister Punjab, Minister of Irrigation & Power, Minister of Health & Family Welfare; Deputy Minister from 1961 to 62 in the cabinet of Late Chief Minister Mr. Partap Singh Kairon, Member of Punjab Legislative assembly form 1971-72. SUKHBIR CONDOLES THE DEATH OF HARCHARAN SINGH BRAR

Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister, Punjab, today expressed profound grief at the demise of M. Harcharan Singh Brar, former Chief Minister of Punjab and Governor of Haryana who expired in PGI here today.
In the condolence message, Mr. Badal said that Mr. Brar was a statesman politician, who led the party from front, at the time of crises after the assassination of Mr. Beant Singh.

Describing Mr. Brar a grass root party leader, Deputy Chief Minister said that Mr. Brar was a leader with a balanced view who respected democratic norms. He said that Mr. Brar was endeared by the people of his area due to personal attention given by him for the development of the area.

Meanwhile Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Member Parliament from Bathinda Parliamentary Constituency, also condoled the death of former Chief Minister Mr. Harcharan Singh Brar. She described Mr. Brar as man of the masses who worked throughout of his career for the welfare of downtrodden and oppressed in the society.

Chandigarh September 6: The Education Minister Punjab Dr Upinderjit Kaur today expressed sorrow and grief at the death of former Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Harcharn Singh Brar.

In a condolence message the Education Minister said that Mr. Brar was a great statesman, seasoned politician, an able administrator and a great human being. She described him as leader of masses who tirelessly worked hard for the upliftment of unprivileged sections of society. With his death, the state has been devoid of the services of dedicated leader whose contribution in the field of education would be remembered, she said.
