The Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal today gave in principle approval to the Vice Chancellor Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar Prof. Dr. AS Brar to open a Center at the local Khalsa College Public School for preparing rural students of the state for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology from the academic session 2010-11

.
A decision to this effect was taken by Mr. Badal at a meeting held here at Chief Minister’s residence this morning.  He directed the Secretary Planning to make a budgetary allocation of Rs.139.17 lac for the proposed Center in the state annual plan. The Chief Minister asked the Vice Chancellor Prof. Brar to run this Center in such a manner that the students with rural background could reap enormous benefit through this novel scheme.

Describing this step towards the holistic development of rural students, Prof. Brar said that he had taken up this initiative on the pattern of Bihar where a NGO of some professionals imparted coaching to bright students from economically unprivileged section of the society and consequently, a number of students from the lower strata of society including a son of watchman and another a petty shopkeeper besides several others who could not have even dreamt of entering an IIT have successfully cracked the IIT entrance test.  These students called “Group of Super 30” were provided free coaching, food and accommodation.  All the thirty students of 2009 batch were able to get admission to an IIT.   Thus there was an immediate need to start a similar programme for rural and economically deprived bright students from rural Punjab so that these students could brighten their academic prospects by securing admission in this elite institution.

Prof. Brar further said that though this was a challenging task but he was confident that it would certainly prove to be a successful venture.  He said that this Center would be run through a society under his chairmanship with 12-14 other members including Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Principal Secretary Higher Education, Principal Secretary Finance, besides others to be nominated later on.  Initially the programme would be run for 50 students selected through a state level entrance test and the eligibility criteria would be matriculation, education from a rural school in Punjab and annual income less than Rs.2 lac.

The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Mr. DS Guru, Principal Secretary Technical Education Mr. Suresh Kumar, Secretary Planning Mr. Satish Chandera and Director Technical Education Mr. B.Purushartha.
