India Starts World Cup Kabaddi Campaign in style

Trounces Super Power USA convincingly 62 - 25 

 

Chandigarh  March 03:

Indian Kabaddi Team today started its campaign in world cup kabaddi in style trouncing USA Kabaddi Team convincingly with a score of 62 – 25.

The  India Team led by renowned stopper Mangat Singh Mangi dominated from the word “go” and retained dominance throughout the 40 minutes action filled match.

The USA tried unsuccessfully to come back in the game in the middle of the game but failed to match the skill and determination of Indian Team. A strong crowd of over 60 thousand kabaddi enthusiasts made most of the India dominated inaugural match.

Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal accompanied by his Cabinet Colleagues besides cine stars Dharmendra and Sunny Deol enjoyed each moment of this thrilling match that finished at 2230 hrs.

BADAL CONDOLES THE DEATH OF

AMRIK SINGH POONI

 

CHANDIGARH, APRIL 3:

The Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal today expressed profound grief and sorrow over the sad demise of former Punjab Chief Secretary Mr. Amrik Singh Pooni, who died after a brief illness in CMC at Ludhiana this evening. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

In a condolence message, The Chief Minister said that Mr. Pooni was an able administrator, a renowned Punjabi poet and above all a fine human being with the qualities of head and heart. Mr. Badal said, “The state has lost a gem in the death of Mr. Pooni, who the served the Punjabis with utmost dedication and sincerity to steer Punjab as a front-runner state in the country”.

Expressing heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family, Mr. Badal prayed to the Almighty to give strength to them to bear this loss and grant peace to the departed soul.

Patiala, April 3:  A captivating colourful Opening Ceremony gave a befitting start to 11-day sports bonanza Pearls World Cup Kabaddi Punjab-2010, with Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal promising renewed focus on rural games in new Sports Policy of the State. As Mr. Badal declared the games open the field was set open with nine nations vying for Rs. 2.2 crore prize money in first ever drug free World Cup Kabaddi. The presence of cine star Dharmender and Sunny Deol in Turbaned outfit added a new zing to the tournament For the first time in Kabaddi tournament nine nations collectively vowed to remain in total discipline and play the games in sportsman spirit.   

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Badal expressed happiness that his dream of giving boost to the traditional game Kabbadi has been realized. He said that new sports policy besides focusing on rural games would open new vistas of employment for players with direction being issued to every department to fill the backlog of sports quota jobs within six months. Emphasizing that by adopting sports as our culture, Mr. Badal said that games can wean away our youth from drug creating a healthy society.

Mr. Badal said that in this tournament the winning team would receive a cash award of Rs one crore besides a glittering rolling trophy. Runners-up would take Rs 51 lakh and third place winners Rs 21 lakh. Her sad that the fourth position would be worth Rs 10 lakh, besides, individual awards (tractors) and other prizes would also be given among the winners. Each team will also get a sum of Rs 5 lakh as appearance money, the deputy Chief Minister announced to a thunderous applause.

Earlier Mr. Badal unfurled the flag and declared the games open . He was also introduced to the players from teams from all participating nine countries.

Earlier the most beautiful ceremony that country has ever seen besides rot of colour showcased its strong cultural legacy, represented and celebrated through folk dances of 14 states right from Kerala in South and Sikkim and Arunachal Pradeh in East. The opening ceremony reflected the vision of Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal and organising skills of Mr. Bikram Singh Majithia. On one hand folk singer Sarbjit Cheema and Lakhwinder Wadali regaled the audience, the satirist Bhagwant Mann and Jagtar Jaggi gave a new impetus to the show. The ceremony on one hand provided a unique opportunity for the people to witness colourful, vibrant and authentic folk dances drawn from various parts of the country besides projecting the strength of such a diverse country before whole world that was bound by common secular thread.

A strong troupe of 455 internationally renowned artists drawn from all states of the country presented a 100 minutes long synchronised show mesmerising audience. It may be the Gidha, Bhangra, Jhoomar, Gatka Bazigar from the host state, Punjab or Nagrara Vadan, Kinnouri Natti from neighbouring Haryana, people lapped up everything. Akhara, Saila Karma from Madhya Pradesh, Sambalpuri Dhol, Paika Akhara(Orrisa), Dangi, Sidhi Goma(Gujarat) Gaur Maria (Chhatisgarh) showcased celebration of good harvest season, worshipping gods, traditional rituals on the occasion of birth and marriage, agricultural practices, celebrating different festivals and seasons, tribute to nature etc. Songi Mukhawate (Maharashtra) Dholu Kunita (Karnataka) Kalaripattu (Kerala) Dhimsa (Andhra Pradesh) Charkula (Uttar Pradesh) Biju (Tripura) Thangta (Manipur) Bhapang Vadan (Rajasthan) underlined the spirit of unity in our diverse culture and besides inculcating cultural consciousness among the masses towards our rich cultural heritage.

Giving the background of the trournament former minister and Vice Chairman of Organising Committee Mr. Bikram Singh Majithia said that with the organisation of this World Cup, this game would get international recognition. He said that this tournament was also instrumental in binding the Punjabis living in various countries all over the globe.

Prominent amongst others included Master Mohan Lal Transport Minister, Mr. Parminder Singh Dhindsa PWD Minister, Vice Chairman of Orgainising Committee Mr. Sikander Singh Maluka, SAD Gen. Secy. Mr. Prem Singh Chandumajra, Secretary Sports Mr. P.S. Aujla, Director Public Relations Mr. D.S.Mangat, Director Sports Mr. Pargat Singh, IG Patiala Zone Mr. Paramjit Singh Gill , DIG Mr. S.K.Asthana, Deputy Commissioner Mr. Priyank Bharti and SSP Mr. R.S.Khatra were also present.

It may be added that the teams have been divided into two pools. Hosts India have been placed in Pool A while their traditional rivals Pakistan are in Pool B. United States of America, Australia, Italy and Iran are in Pool A along with India. Canada, United Kingdom and Spain are in Pool B along with Pakistan. Three mathces will be conducted daily during the league phase of the tournament. Two top teams from each pool will qualify for semi-finals which will be played at the Sports Stadium in Bathinda on April 10. Classification matches for the third and fourth places and final will be played at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana on April 12.

Dr Coonar is back to medical college  Patiala

Chandigarh , April 3

Dr PPS  Coonar Joint director Medical Education and Research Punjab has taken over  as Prof. and Head  Department of Social and Preventive Medicine,  Government Medical College Patiala. He has had the longest term as Joint Director in the department where he joined in January 2005.

He was also Departmental Nodal officer for most of the additional departmental works,  including RTI, Human Right Commission, High Court, Edusat and Nodal Authority for Private Medical institutions. He was one of the first to put up the departmental Manual of Right to Information Act on the departmental website. He also critically reviewed the Human Development Report for the department which was highly lauded  by  the then Chief Secretary Mr Jai Singh Gill.

Dr. Coonar  is an eminent Public health specialist and has travelled worldwide on official assignments in relation to growth of the Medical education. He has also been a WHO fellow to University of Mastrict,  Holland . He has been posted back on personal request to pursue his academic pursuits which include publication  of  two books.

RETIREMENT AGE REMAINS UNCHANGED AT 58 YEARS

 

ENTRY AGE INTO GOVERNMENT SERVICE RAISED

FROM 35 TO 37 YEARS

 CHANDIGARH APRIL 03:

The Council of Ministers today unanimously decided not to enhance the age of retirement to 60 from 58 years. 

A decision to this effect was taken here at a meeting of the Cabinet chaired by the Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal this morning. 

Disclosing this here today a spokesman of the Punjab Government said that the age of retirement remained unchanged at 58.  

The Cabinet also gave in principle approval to increase the age for entry into government service from 35 to 37 years. 

In another significant decision, the Cabinet also decided that all the departments should send comprehensive proposals to the government for recruitment of essential staff on priority.

PUNJAB MULLS TO GENERATE 1000 MW SOLAR POWER IN COLLABORATION WITH SUNPOWER CORPORATION AND EBS

 

CHANDIGARH APRIL 03:

In a bid to tap optimum potential of solar energy in Punjab, the state government has decided to set up a chain of solar power plants in collaboration with Internationally acclaimed USA based SunPower Corporation and Enterprise Business Solutions (EBS) for generating nearly 1000 MW power in a phased manner over next two years. 

A decision to this effect was taken at a high level meeting with the joint delegation of SunPower Corporation and Entrepreneur Business Solutions from USA by the Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal here at Chief Minister's residence late last evening. 

The Chief Minister directed the Secretary Science & Technology Mr.Viswajeet Khanna to prepare a comprehensive plan to establish a network of solar power plants in the state in collaboration with SunPower and EBS through Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA). 

Mr. Badal also asked the representatives of SunPower and EBS to set up a demo projects at the rooftops of the government buildings for tapping solar energy which could be later on replicated in other government buildings such as district administrative complexes, warehousing and Markfed godowns. 

Mr. Badal also stated that he would soon call on Union Renewable Energy Minister Mr. Farooq Abdullah to get some projects of solar power allotted for the state under the various schemes of the Ministry of Renewable Energy as the state had abundant solar energy.    Mr. Badal also gave in principle approval to the proposal mooted by the SunPower-EBS groupto set up a Center for training the youth in solar technologies here at PEDA complex. 

Making a presentation to the Chief Minister, Mr.Gurmeet Naroola Incharge of SunPower business development India apprised that SunPower was the world’s largest and best technology to manufacture high efficiency solar panels. 

He said that EBS-SunPower was in joint venture to bring the latest solar technology along with its plan of localized manufacturing in Punjab with a investment to the tune of Rs. 500 crore providing employment to the state and also setting up the first entrepreneur Center in association with PEDA to impart training and certification in the field of latest solar technologies which would bring new opportunities of jobs and investments in this field which in turn will benefit the state with more power generated through solar.   

He also extended invitation to the team of PEDA to visit USA to study the economic viability of the solar systems on the rooftops of residential and commercial buildings besides company's solar plants in different parts of North America. 

Taking part in the deliberations, Chairman-cum-Managing Director EBS Mr. Jessie Singh said that EBS-SunPower in association PEDA would be generating the solar power from the roof top installations at different Government buildings and any other unutilized place available from the government.  Besides the group would also provide assistance to government in architectural design to get the maximum output from the newly built buildings.

He informed that EBS-SunPower has already started the work of commissioning first largest grid connected 5 MW solar power plant at village Sahiba in Tehsil Balachaur of distrct Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar which was likely to be operational in July, 2010. 

Earlier, the Vice President Technology of SunPower Dr. Doug Rose addressed the scope and future of solar energy. 

Prominent amongst others who were present in the meeting included Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Mr. DS Guru, Secretary Science & Technology Mr.Viswajeet Khanna and Director PEDA Mr. Balour Singh.
