HARSIMRAT’S
NOVEL DRIVE AGAINST BREAST CANCER DETECTS 10 POSITIVE CASES IN
20 DETECTION CAMPS
Five Member Cancer specialists team to camp in Malwa region
for a month
Chandigarh, October 27:
The campaign of Member Parliament Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal
to focus the attention of Nation on the unprecedented rise in
the cases of cancer in general and breast cancer particular amongst
the women yielded results with an NGO, Roko Cancer Charitable
Trust dispatching a five member high level team of Medical oncologists
and radiologists to Bathinda. The team that started its first
cancer detection camp today at Talwandi Sabo would conduct a series
of 16 camps in the Cancer hit villages of Bathinda and Mansa districts.
It may be added that Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal had been pursuing
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Union Health Minister Mr.
Gulam Nabi Azad drawing their attention towards rising cases of
Cancer in Malwa belt. She had requested the Union Government to
get a specialized study conducted in Malwa region to find the
root cause of Cancer in this region. She had requested Prime Minister
to approve setting up of an All India Institute of Oncology and
Radiology at Bathinda.
As a prelude to the visit of this special team, the Punjab Health
Department had conducted over 20 camps and examined 1924 women
during last three weeks and detected that over 10 women were suffering
from breast cancer and due to early diagnosis they could be screened
with symptoms at initial stages. The Health workers had been motivating
women residents of the villages to get them examined for detection
of breast cancer so that if detected in early stage, they could
be provided treatment in the hospital.
With the efforts of volunteers 1924 patients were examined in
20 camps organized in remote villages of Malwa region. The Mammography
of 486 cases having suspected symptoms was got done. After detailed
study of Mammography reports, biopsy of suspected 64 cases was
got done at Civil Hospital Mansa out of which 24 suspected cases
were taken for FNC clinical examination. Out of these 24 cases,
10 women were found suffering from breast cancer at initial stages.
Commenting on this whole exercise Mrs. Badal said that she was
making humble efforts to educate the women to come forward to
get them checked so that cancer could be detected at an early
stage and they could be provided timely treatment. She said that
women generally were oblivious of risk of cancer and were taking
these problems lightly. She said that it was quite difficult task
to make rural women agree to get them selves examined for suspected
breast cancer. She thanked the health department for making all
out efforts to make this campaign a success.
The Member Parliament said that she had already requested Prime
Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to setup an All India Institute of
Radiotherapy and Oncology in Malwa region so that patents suffering
from cancer need not go to Sri Ganganagar or other distant places
for treatment. She said that without waiting for any response
from Union government to her proposal, she herself has started
this humble exercise and was happy to know that this month long
campaign in 20 villages could detect 10 positive cases at an early
stage. She said that by providing them timely treatment we would
be able to save their lives and help these families.
The member Parliament hoped that this campaign in other villages
would motivate women to come forward and get them examined without
any fear or shame.
