PUNJABI CULTURAL COUNCIL URGES PM TO ACCORD HERITAGE CITY STATUS TO HOLY CITY AMRITSAR

Chandiagrh December 13
Jaswant Singh Chhapa

The Punjabi Cultural Council (PCC) has urged the Prime Minister to accord the heritage city status to the holy city Amritsar soon as it houses the temporal seat of Sikh religion and also a birthplace of Luv and Kush.

In a letter sent to the PM Dr Manmohan Singh, PCC Chairman S. Jaswant Singh Chhapa rued that it was ironical that Amritsar was being deprived the heritage status even as other cities of the country, which were not as old as Amritsar was, have already been accorded the heritage status. "So what is preventing the government from according the status to Amritsar which deserves even more,” he asked the GOI.

He said that Amritsar city houses 10.03 lakh people (2001 census), 3000 more than the technical requirement for shifting it from Category B to C, the category which lists 28 cities on the basis of their religious, historical and tourist importance. These cities have got greater financial contribution on the patter of 80:20 to develop their infrastructure, S Chappa lamented.

Making a forceful demand for declaring Amritsar a heritage city, the PCC Chairman further said that the historic city houses a pride of places which Harmandar Sahib and Jallian Wala Bagh enjoyed in the world, with top international leaders making time to offer prayers and visits there. About two lakh devotees daily offer prayers at the Golden Temple.
He rued the fact that while Lahore is a world heritage site but Amritsar is struggling for heritage tag in India. The Punjab government should prepare plans and proposals for the development of the historic city and its sites to attract the pilgrims and tourists, he said.
