BADAL CONDOLES THE DEATH OF S. HARKISHAN
SINGH SURJIT

Punjab Chief Minister, S. Parkash Singh Badal today expressed
profound grief over the sad demise of Communist Leader S. Harkishan
Singh Surjit.
In a statement Mr. Badal described Mr. Surjit as a leader who
remained committed to whatever ideology he believed in till his
death. Mr. Badal said that Mr. Surjit belonged to that golden
era when strength of personal relations was recognized despite
differences of political ideologies.
Mr. Badal described the death of Mr. Surjit 'as a personal loss'.
He said that Mr. Surjit always maintained close association with
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and also stood with SAD in many battles
against draconian and anti democratic measures of then Congress
regimes, as in the case of Emergency.

Bringing Government machinery at the door step of people, Mr.
Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab held Sangat Darshan
Programme, here today in five different wards of Amritsar South
Assembly Constituency. He was accompanied by Mr. Inderbir Singh
Bolaria, MLA Amritsar South, Mr. Shwait Malik, Mayor, Mr. Kahan
Singh Pannu, Deputy Commissioner, Mr. D.P.S. Kharbanda, Commisisioner,
Municipal Corporation, Mr. Kanwar Vijay Partap Singh, SSP and
a host of local Akali-BJP leaders.
Lending a sympathetic ear to the problems of people, Mr. Badal
redressed their grievances on-the-spot. He thanked the voters
for exercising their franchise in favour of Akali-BJP candidate
during the recent byelection for Amritsar South Constituency and
assured that he would fulfill all the pre-poll promises. Mr. Badal
today handed over cheques worth nearly Rs. 4 crore to Municipal
Corporation for completing the on going works related to strengthening
of roads, installation of tubewells, street lights, sewerage system
and supply of clean drinking water in ward no.33,35,43,44 and
58.
Mr. Badal announced that the long pending demand of people of
the constituency for covering the drain carrying sullage from
Khazana Gate area (The Ganda Nallah) would soon be fulfilled and
a project worth Rs. 495 lakh would be initiated for the same.
Besides, soon a project for R.O. purified water supply system
in all the major cities of Punjab including Amritsar would be
initiated whereby consumers will get pure water at the cost of
10 paise per litre as compare to Rs. 10 per litre of mineral water
available in the market.
Seeking cooperation and support from the public for the success
of various Government Projects, the Chief Minister, Punjab asked
the people to observe restraint from throwing garbage in the streets
and also suggested to install C.F.L. lights in their houses in
order to save nearly 250 to 300 MW of power.
`Talking to media persons, Mr. Badal said that the recent news
as reported in a few of the newspapers regarding the shifting
of World Class Central University from Amritsar to Bathinda is
absolutely baseless. "There is no plan whatsoever regarding
shifting of this University; it would be set up in Amritsar and
Amritsar alone", he asserted. He also expressed disapproval
on the need to set up a special central agency to counter terrorism
as declared by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India and
said that by strengthening the available police force, the task
can be accomplished.

Chandigarh, July 1: Mr. Manoranjan Kalia, Local Government &
Industries Minister Punjab today expressed profound grief and
sorrow over the sad demise of the veteran Marxist leader Harkishan
Singh Surjit. Who breathed his last today.
Describing him a seasoned Politician Mr. Kalia conveyed his
heart felt sympathies to the bereaved family members.
