Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, arrived in New Delhi, India on Thursday for a two-day visit aimed at enhancing bilateral ties and cooperation with India. The visit holds significant importance as India, a Cold War-era ally of Russia, navigates its stance amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Kuleba's itinerary includes meetings with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and discussions with the deputy national security advisor, as confirmed by India's Foreign Ministry. Additionally, on Thursday, Kuleba is scheduled to pay his respects to Mahatma Gandhi at the Rajghat memorial site, a symbolic gesture highlighting the shared values of peace and non-violence.

The visit follows recent conversations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. India has maintained a stance emphasizing diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, refraining from direct criticism of Russia.

In a social media post on March 20,

Modi reiterated India's support for peace efforts in Ukraine and expressed a commitment to providing humanitarian assistance. Modi's discussions with Putin also underscored the importance of dialogue and peace in resolving the conflict.

India, under Modi's leadership, has positioned itself as a mediator between Western powers and Russia regarding the Ukraine conflict. Zelenskyy's encouragement for India's participation in the proposed Peace Summit further highlights India's evolving role in international diplomacy.

Ukraine has expressed interest in strengthening trade and economic ties with India, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, aviation, pharmaceuticals, and industrial products. This aligns with India's efforts to diversify its partnerships and reduce dependence on Russian supplies, particularly in defense and technology sectors.

While India has refrained from voting against Moscow at the United Nations, it has simultaneously increased purchases of discounted Russian oil post-invasion. However, India has also intensified engagements with Western powers, including the United States and the European Union, and is actively participating in initiatives like the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) alongside the US, Australia, and Japan.

The visit underscores Ukraine's desire for greater international support in resolving the conflict with Russia, and India's role as a key player in shaping the dynamics of regional and global diplomacy.
