Trade unions serve strike notice to NLC management,
opposing the partial privatisation

Opposing participation of private sector in Neyveli Lignite Corporation's (NLC) operations, 12 trade unions of the corporation have threatened to go on strike from Dec 25.

The trade unions submitted strike notice yesterday, P Babu Rao, general manger NLC told reporters Later, about 3,000 NLC workers took out a rally denouncing the government's decision to involve private parties in the operation of NLC.

The DMK led trade union would submit strike notice to the management opposing the partial privatisation, trade union sources said.

Construction of 210 MW power was given to an NRI last year while Rs.70 crore contract for removing earth for mining activities was given to a Gujarat base company last week. Private parties have also been given contract in maintenance and transport department of the company.

There are about 20,000 permanent employees in NLC besides about 20,000 people working on a daily wages basis.

NLC produces 2,490 mw through its three thermal power station. It also produces 70,000 tones of lignite a day. PTI
