in United States of America.

and simple culture loving boy from his home town.

American beauties
RAJESH RAI CHATLA meets Jahnavi and Sowmya - the two girls from
New York who have landed in Sandalwood to try their luck in Kannada
films.
Kannada film industry has two new entrants. But they are not your
usual types. They speak a different language; their nationality
is different!
This is their first brush with filmdom. Yet, they know almost everything
associated with glamour, coming from the fashionable
New York.
They are Jahnavi and Sowmya who have been selected by director
Kodlu Ramakrishna for his new movie Miss California, produced by
NRI Ravi Dattatreya.
Jahnavi did her studies in Califronia. She is lovingly called Janu
by her family members. Her father Arasu works in a health care centre
while mom Jumma Devi is a doctor. Brother Pavan is studying medicine.
Barring her participation in a few school plays, Janu is a novice
when it comes to acting. She, however holds a degree in international
relations and Japanese language. According to her, she was offered
Miss California around 12 years ago, which she had accepted. (That
means to say that the NRI producer had planned this movie that early!)
I have already modelled for a few modelling agencies. This
is my first major assignment. My dream is to become a successful
business woman, she says.
What does she know about Miss California? Not much, except that
it will be set in a rural background.
Does she know anything about Kannada? Has she seen any of the Kannada
films? No, says Janu. But she knows about Shahrukh,
Aishwarya, Rani and Amir, she adds.
The other actress in the film, Sowmya is settled in Queens, New
York. Her grandmother is in Mysore. Sowmya studied in Bangalore
till standard VII. Her father Krishnamurthy is a bank employee while
mom Tara is a housewife.
I am living in NY for the past 12 years, working in an IT
company. I have often visited Bangalore during my vacation. I got
my portfolio done while in college. Modelling offers started pouring
in and I modelled for jewellery products and walked the ramp too.
I took part in Indian cultural shows, says the tall girl.
The films happened all of a sudden. That does not mean that
I didnt think about acting in movies.
I found out that the Miss California crew was looking for actresses
through a website and I applied. I also found out that the producer
was based in New York.
I spoke to Ravi Dattatreya and Ramprasad about my stint in modelling
and was selected. In the film, she plays a pucca Indian woman.
According to her, the story is really good.
Is she interested in continuing to act in movies? I dont
know. I havent thought about it. Has she watched any
Kannada movie of late? I have watched Ekangi, Preeti, Prema,
Pranaya and recently, Poorvaapara.
I love to watch Kannada films, but sadly the movies do not reach
America at all! she says. Sowmya is learning creative
and contemporary dance from a Bengali teacher for the past
one year.
Proud of being a Kannadathi, Sowmya is yet to take a decision on
her future.
