The Bhopal Police have failed to get custody of Monica
Bedi, companion of mobster Abu Salem, in connection
with a case of fake passport she allegedly used to flee
the country.
A court in Hyderabad, where Bedi is in judicial custody,
turned down their request after her lawyer contended
that she had been extradited from Lisbon in connection
with the Mumbai blasts and not for acquiring fake passport,
a senior police official said.
A team of Bhopal Police returned to Bhopal on Monday
from Hyderabad without her.
Monica, was extradited to India earlier in November
along with Salem, who is wanted by the Indian police
in over 50 cases including the 1993 serial blasts in
Mumbai.
The Bhopal police had registered a case against Monica
in 2001 for acquiring fake passport in the name of Fauzia
Rehman.
Since then, courts in Bhopal have issued several arrest
warrants against her.
A court had asked Bhopal police to produce Monica on
November 19, failing which it issued a fresh warrant.
Armed with the warrant, two Bhopal police officials
had approached a court in Hyderabad for her custody.
"When we produced the arrest and production warrant
in the court in Hyderabad, Monica's lawyer contended
that she had been extradited to India for the Mumbai
bomb blasts and not for acquiring fake passports. The
court agreed and turned down our plea," the official
said.
However, he said police would again try for her custody.
