Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago announced the date and location
of it’s 14th annual sports festival in Chicago area. With
focus on fitness, healthy life style and summer fun, the vibrant
Punjabi Community of Chicago is going to enjoy a healthier community
fun fair “Punjabi Sports Festival 2008” on Sunday, August
10, from 9 AM to 6 PM, at Palatine Park District grounds, 250 E.
Wood Street, Palatine, Illinois. Admission and Punjabi lunch are
free. All are welcome.
Due to a large number of contesting teams, the Basketball tournament
matches, will be played on Saturday, August 9, 2008, 9 am to 6 pm,
indoor facilities at Palatine Park District, 250 E. Wood Street,
in Palatine, IL. The other games will be at the main event on August
10.
Mayor of Palatine Rita Mullins is scheduled to inaugurate the festival
at 12 noon on August 10, her 14th year in a row. Several other dignitaries
are also invited to attend. Maintaining their tradition the participants
will parade the grounds with Dhol music at the inauguration ceremonies.
Bhangra Aerobics by Shamila Khetarpal is scheduled to be at 12:30
pm and the Warrior Workout Yoga by Shabad Kaur Khalsa will be at
2 pm. Both of these are for all learning levels and almost anyone
can do it. All are welcome and there is no charge.
Kabaddi, soccer, basketball, and volleyball teams from Wisconsin,
Michigan, Indiana, New York, and Illinois are competing for the
championships. The Kabaddi finals are scheduled to be at 4 pm. The
first prize for winning Kabaddi team is $2100, second prize $1100.
Soccer winner’s first prize is $1100.
This community event will include many team sports and fun games
for men, women and children. In addition to Kabaddi, Basketball,
Volleyball, Soccer, Bhangra aerobics, and Yoga. Athletic events
including races for children in various age groups are being planned.
Free continental breakfast, soft drinks and complimentary Punjabi
lunch will be provided to all in attendance. Parking is free.
“PCS’ aim is to bring our community together and create
the awareness of a holistic healthy lifestyle while having fun playing
sports,” said Amarjit Kaur Atwal the P.C.S. president.
“Exercise, fun, food, entertainment, socializing, and parking
are all for free,” said Jarnail Singh Lail the PCS chairperson.
Online registration thru PCS website is available for teams to
enter the tournament. Individual athletes can register before or
on the day of the event by noon. Team registration last day is July
31, 2008, and the fee is $50 per team. Individual sports registration
fee is $5.
Busy schedule calls for the volleyball games to start early. Soccer
and Kabaddi finals will follow the participant’s parade at
12 noon during inauguration.
Prize distribution to the winners will highlight the fun-filled
closing ceremonies at 6 PM.
Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place athletes
for individual sports and the team players. Kabaddi Cup, Soccer
Cup, Volleyball Cup and Basketball Cup will be awarded to the winning
teams along with cash prizes for Kabaddi and Soccer.
This is an all day community event starting at 9 AM. Fun games
for the seniors and ladies will include musical chairs, water balloon
toss and tug-of-war. The program is a not for profit community event
which is free to public. Sponsors and donors will be appropriately
recognized at the festival. Vendors are encouraged to set up their
