Former FBI agent questioned at Air India trial

VANCOUVER, April 08, 2004

A former FBI agent has been questioned about an alleged confession at the Air India trial in Vancouver.

Ron Parrish testified earlier that a Sikh informant told him accused bomber Ajaib Singh Bagri admitted his involvement in the 1985 bombing plot. The informant is a key witness against Ajaib Singh Bagri and cannot be named by court order.

But Michael Code, Bagri's lawyer, wanted to know why Parrish never told his superiors about the alleged confession.

Code told the court that perhaps there never was an admission of guilt.

The trial postponed hearing more evidence about the FBI last month so that lawyers could travel to New York to gather more information.

In earlier cross-examination, Parrish admitted he helped the witness, an illegal alien with a criminal record, obtain U.S. immigration documents. Parrish said the FBI wanted to keep the witness in the U.S. to continue informing on the activities of Sikh militants.

Code questioned Parrish about a series of FBI memos that were produced following meetings with the informant in 1985. He accused Parrish of reporting useless information about Sikh militants to his superiors but not the informant's alleged admission from Bagri.

Ajaib Singh Bagri and Ripudaman Singh Malik are on trial, charged with killing 331 people in two separate bombings on the same day in June, 1985.

One bomb killed 329 people onboard Air India flight 182, most of them Canadians. The other bomb killed two baggage handlers at Tokyo's Narita Airport.
